Fixing Up The Camper

before before after Now

Sometime late June or early July, after we visit Oregon and Germany, we will start on our extended journey through the South American continent. This time, we neither have a schedule nor a final destination. This will take a while. The only “plan” at the start is to meander along and zig-zag across the Andes mountains in a southerly direction.
Why do we want to do this? Because we can, because we’re on this continent and want to go on a slope finding safari along these 4,000 mile long Andes, and because we’re still (barely) young and healthy enough to do it. How do we do this? By driving the same trusty Toyota with the same camper top. Well, they’re almost the same: we’ve meticulously maintained the 21-year old truck, and we just completely remodeled the 37 year old camper. This post is a photo tour of the camper remodeling job.

After a complete stripping, we loaded up the camper to haul it to a carpenter’s shop

Repairs and reinforcements and new insulation with styrofoam; note the new frame under the floor in the photo where the camper is laying in its right side

We sheeted the camper with 1/8th inch plywood, before we covered it with a layer of fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin

With all edges reinforced with special braided fiberglass tape, it was ready for paint. We painted it with 2-component epoxy paint.

Stuff is happening! Let’s wake up this blog from its hibernation

ShredAir’s Journey is now a Trilogy: Northwest, Colombia, and The Andes.

The NORTHWEST section of our blog records our 2008 journey from Oregon in the Northwest of USA to Colombia in the Northwest of South America. We did so by loading our old camper onto our Toyota pickup and driving through Mexico and Central America.

In COLOMBIA we promoted slope soaring in the Andes Mountains through workshops, fun fly gatherings and events, and offered tourism packages for pilots and their families. After living in Colombia for six years and gaining a better understanding on how Latin America ticks, it’s time for us to move on.

Thus we come to the third and new part of the blog, THE ANDES. Twenty years ago, when I bought the Toyota pickup brand new with 2 miles on the odometer, I told Marcela “some day we’ll drive it down to the southern tip of South America.”
Well, “some day” has come, and you will be able to follow along. Be prepared for a longer vagabondage, because we neither have a fixed schedule nor a final destination. We’ll take time to pause the journey and to soar with the Condor.
