From Creel to Zacatecas

It’s October 20th, and we are in Zacatecas, an interesting city full of harsh contrasts. Thus, we made it about 600 miles in three days; not too good, is it? We are now about two weeks slower than we anticipated, but we are enjoying the journey.
The drive has been very scenic: from canyons and curves to cactus, corn fields, and wild flowers. On Saturday, we camped in Canutillo right at the hacienda of Francisco “Pancho” Villa, now a museum. Canutillo is a backwater, and people here live a simple life, and they are very friendly and hospitable.
Just as friendly were the people at our next free campsite, a sports complex in the town of Sain Alto. For some reason, this town is much more affluent than Canutillo, and it has several schools. We visited the Benito Juarez Technical High School and talked to three of their classes about our trip.
Now we’re parked at the fancy Hotel El Bosque in Zacatecas immediately above some dismal slums. Thus, tonight we’re paying for a perfect wifi connection up on this hill of the “haves” overlooking a valley of “have-nots.” This very colonial town does have a lot of charm and a lot of traffic, creating a mix which makes it difficult to decide if you love it or hate it.
Zacatecas also is a cross-roads for us, and we’re deciding tonight which way we’ll proceed from here. Stay tuned but don’t hold your breath; it may be a few days before we check in again.

Von Creel nach Zacatecas

Heute ist der 20. Oktober, and wir sind in Zacatecas, eine interesante Stadt voller starker Gegensätze. Wir schafften also etwa 1000 km in drei Tagen, nicht so toll, oder? Wir sind jetzt schon etwa zwei Wochen langsamer als wir dachten, aber wir geniesen die Reise.
Die Fahrt hierher war landschaftlich wunderbar: von Canyons und Kaktus bis Maisfelder und wilden Blumenwiesen. Am Samstag übernachteten wir in Canutillo gleich neben der Hacienda von Francisco “Pancho” Villa, die jetzt ein Museum ist. Canutillo ist im Hinterland, und die Menschen dort leben sehr einfach, und sie sind auch sehr gastfreundlich.
Genauso freundlich waren die Leute an unserem nächsten “Campingplatz,” einem Sportgelände in Sain Alto. Aus welchen Gründen auch immer ist Sain Alto erheblich wohlhabender als Canutillo. Es hat ein Schulzentrum, und wir besuchten drei Klassen und erzählten über unsere Reise.
Heute abend stehn wir im Parkplatz des feudalen Hotel Bosque in Zacatecas direkt über einem Armenviertel. Wir zahlen heute also für diesen perfekten Internetanschluß auf einem Hügel der Bonzen, der aus dem Tal der Armen herausragt. Zacatecas ist eine sehn koloniale Stadt, die viel Charm und Autoverkehr hat, eine Mischung die es einem schwer macht zu entwcheiden ob man diese Stadt liebt oder haßt.
Zacatecas ist auch eine Weggabel für uns, und wir werden uns heute abend enscheiden müssen wohin es weitergeht. Aber bitte jetzt nicht die Luft anhalten, es wird schon wieder ein paar Tage dauern bevor wir uns wieder melden.

De Creel a Zacatecas

Es 20 de octubre y estamos en Zacatecas, una ciudad interesante llena de contrastes. Hemos recorrido 1000 kilómetros en tres días, no muy bueno, cierto? De acuerdo a lo que habíamos anticipado estamos dos semanas retrasados; sin embargo, estamos disfrutando del viaje.
El recorrido ha sido muy pintoresco: cañones y curvas con cactus, campos de maíz y flores silvestres. El sábado, acampamos en Canutillo en la Hacienda de Francisco Pancho” Villa, la cual es ahora un museo. Canutillo es un remanso, su gente vive una vida simple y son muy amigables y hospitalarios.
Lo mismo podemos decir de las personas en nuestro siguiente campamento, un parque deportivo en el pueblo de Saín Alto. Por alguna razón, este poblado es mucho mas afluente que Canutillo y tiene varias escuelas. En la mañana, visitamos la Escuela Secundaria Técnica Benito Juárez y hablamos con tres de las clases sobre nuestro viaje.
Ahora estamos estacionados en el parqueadero del elegante Hotel El Bosque en Zacatecas inmediatamente encima de unos tugurios lamentables. Por lo tanto, esta noche estamos pagando por una perfecta conexión inalámbrica “wifi” en lo alto de estos cerros de los que “tienen” con vista hacia el valle de “los que no tienen.” Zacatecas es una ciudad colonial que tiene su encanto y mucho trafico, creando una mezcla la cual es difícil decidir si se le ama o se le odia.
Zacatecas es el sitio donde tenemos que decidir que ruta continuar y esta noche decidiremos. Estén atentos pero no sostengan la respiración puede que nos tome unos días para volver a reportarnos.
