Volcano Road

Happy Thanksgiving! -- We’re in Costa Rica now at the Finca Cañas Castilla run by the Swiss couple Agi and Guido Sutter.
Monday, we left Emilio’s hospitality in Tegucigalpa and drove to the border at Las Manos (Honduras/Nicaragua), only to find it completely closed and swarming with police. We thus retreated into the nearby town of El Paraiso, where we obtained a safe camping spot in the yard of Instituto Hondureño del Cafe.
The border was open again Tuesday morning, and we crossed into Nicaragua fairly easily. The roads were good, and we arrived at San Jorge on Lake Nicaragua in the early afternoon. The lake was full to the brim after the rainy season, and there was no beach for camping. We looked around and found “Hotel California” just a 5-minute walk from the lake. The hotel is run by Floridian Frank Ingram, it is clean and quiet, and we can recommend it as a great place to stay (it even has WiFi).
Wednesday, we faced the only border crossing between Nicaragua and Costa Rica at Peñas Blancas. It is busy and convoluted, but Marcela waded through the mess with determination and without paying a penny to one of the pesky “tramitadores” (swarms of young men trying to make a buck helping you navigate the border), and she got us through in 2.5 hours.
From there, it was only a 10-mile drive to the Swiss finca (turn-off just before Sonzapote bridge), where a friendly welcome awaited us. Also on the welcoming committee were howler and spider monkeys, a sloth, big blue butterflies, many birds, and even a crocodile.
Today, we’ll go to La Cruz to post this, and tomorrow we’ll head to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

Die Straße der Vulkane

Wir sind jetzt in Costa Rica auf der Finca Cañas Castilla, die dem schweizer Ehepaar Agi und Guido Sutter gehört.
Am Montag ließen wir Emilio’s Gastfreundschaft in Tegucigalpa zurück und fuhren zur Grenze bei Las Manos; aber diese was völlig geschlossen und voller Polizei. Daher zogen wir uns in die nahegelege Stadt El Paraiso zurück, wo wir einen sicheren Campingplatz im Hof des Instituto Hondureño del Cafe fanden.
Am Dienstag früh war dann die Grenze wieder auf, und wir konnten relativ einfach nach Nicaragua einreisen. Da die Straßen meist gut waren, kamen wir schon am frühen Nachmittag in San Jorge am Nicaragua See an. Der See war vom vielen Regen der gerade vergangenen Regenzeit absolut rappelvoll, und wir konnten nicht we geplant am Strand campen weil’s keinen mehr gab. Aber nur 5 Minuten zu Fuß vom See entfernt fanden wir das “Hotel California,” das Frank Ingram (ursprünglich aus Florida) gehört. Das Hotel ist schön und sauber angelegt, es ist ruhig dort, und es gibt sogar WiFi. Wir können es Reisenden gut empfehlen.
Am Mittwoch mußten wir dann zum einzigen und daher kaotischen Grenzübergang von Nicaragua nach Costa Rica. Das ist ein verwirrendes unsinniges Gewurschtel, aber Marcela ackerte sich da durch, so daß wir “nur” 2.5 Stunden für den Übergang brauchten. Und das ohne einem der aufdringlichen “tramidatores” auch nur einen Pfennig zu zahlen.
Von der Grenze sind’s dann nur noch 16 km zur schweizer Finca (Abzweigung kurz vor der Sonzapote Brücke), wo wir herzlich empfangen wurden. Auch mit dabei waren gleich Brüll- und Klammeraffen, große blaue Schmetterlinge, ein Faultier, viele Vögel, und sogar ein Krokodil.
Heute gehen wir nach La Cruz, um diesen Beitrag ins Netz zu stellen, und morgen geht’s an die Pazifikküste.

Camino de los Volcanes

Nos encontramos en Costa Rica en la Finca Cañas Castilla cuyos dueños, Agi y Guido Sutter, son suizos.
El lunes dejamos la hospitalidad de Emilio en Tegucigalpa y fuimos a la frontera con Nicaragua en Las Manos. Al llegar la encontramos cerrada y llena de policía, así de que decidimos regresar al pueblo cercanos El Paraiso donde pasamos la noche estacionados en el Instituto Hondureño del Café.
La frontera estaba abierta de nuevo el martes en la mañana. Hicimos los tramites de inmigración y aduana y entramos a Nicaragua sin mayor dificultad. La carretera esta en muy buen estado y llegamos a San Jorge a orillas del Lago de Nicaragua en la tarde. Debido a las lluvias de esta temporada el lago se ha tomado la playa y no pudimos acampanar en ella. A unos cinco minutos del lago encontramos el Hotel California manejado por Frank Ingram de Florida. Es un sitio que podemos recomendar callado, limpio e inclusive hasta tiene conexión de Internet inalámbrica.
El miércoles enfrentamos la única frontera entre Nicaragua y Costa Rica en Peñas Blancas. Había bastante movimiento y filas; sin embargo, me arme de valor y sin contratar un “tramitador” (persona que ofrecen ayuda con los tramites del cruce) le puse sentido a todo esto y en dos horas y media entramos a Costa Rica.
Cañas Castilla esta a unos 16 kilometros de la frontera (unos metros a la izquierda antes del puente Sonzapote). A nuestra llegada vimos micos, muchos pajáros, un perezoso y el cocodrilo residente de la finca.
Hoy iremos al La Cruz a publicar estas noticias y mañana saldremos hacia la costa Pacífica.
