Second Round... ring... ring!

Here we go again, our next round through South America is starting. We used this 9-month interruption to get work done on the Toyota and the camper. Very important was a better tie-down system for the camper: it is now tied to four hard points on the frame. The hardware and test drives suggest this should be a big improvement… only our travels will tell.

Again, we do not have a plan or a destination, except that we’ll travel around Colombia for a while. First, we’d like to drive across the Andes and down the east slope to “Los Llanos,” the plains. Then, we think of traveling north to the Caribbean Coast. From there, we’ll decide if we deem it safe to visit the desert of La Guajira, Colombia’s northern-most state sharing a long border with Venezuela.

How long this will take, we don’t know. Our “planning horizon” currently does not extend any farther than that, only that ultimately we’ll turn south again.

Los geht's, unsere nächste Runde durch Südamerika hat begonnen. Wir nutzten die letzten neun Monate u. A. um am Toyota und der Kabine rumzuschrauben. Wichtig war eine neue Befestigung der Kabine am Rahmen, anstatt wie bisher an der Karosserie. Testfahrten zeigen, daß das ein sichereres System ist, aber die ganze Wahrheit wird sich wohl erst im Alltagsbetrieb herausstellen.

Und wieder haben wir weder Zeitplan noch Ziel. Wir wollen zuerst eine Weile in Kolumbien herumreisen: die Anden überqueren und den Osthang hinunter zu den „Llanos,“ den Ebenen fahren. Vor dort aus dann nordwärts zur Karibik. Dann werden wir entscheiden, ob es uns sicher genug ist durch die Wüste von La Guajira zu reisen. Das ist Kolumbiens nördlichster Staat, der eine lange Grenze mit Venezuela teilt.

Wie lang all das dauern wird, wissen wir nicht, nur daß es dann irgendwann wieder Richtung Süden gehen soll.

Segunda Ronda ...tilín, tilín!

Aquí vamos de nuevo, nuestra siguiente ronda por Sur America comienza. Estos nueve meses de interrupción los usamos para hacerle mantenimiento a la Toyota y al camper. Lo mas importante es la forma en la que aseguramos el camper a la camioneta; ahora tiene cuatro puntos que van al chasis.  Las pruebas de conducción muestran que este sistema es mucho mejor; sin embargo, solo el uso diario no lo dirá.

Fuera de que estaremos viajando por Colombia, no tenemos un plan o destino definido. Inicialmente, nos gustaría atravesar la Cordillera de los Andes y bajar a Los Llanos. Después pensamos seguir norte hacia la Costa Caribe. Allí decidiremos si nos parece seguro visitar el desierto de la Guajira, la parte mas norte de Colombia que limita con Venezuela.

¿Cuánto tiempo nos tomará? No lo sabemos. El horizonte de nuestro actual plan no se extiende mas que esto. Solamente sabemos que al final nos gustaría volver al sur.
