Test Drive and a Detail

We took the pickup with camper mounted for a quick shake-down drive through and around Girardota. Everything seems to work just as we remember it from years ago, and the Toyota seems to handle the weight well.

After the renovation, the camper’s roof and sides all are smooth with rounded corners and edges, a big improvement over the old aluminum rails. Now, only the ceiling vent is protruding.
This can be a problem when one overlooks a low-hanging cable or tree branches, which could snag and cause damage. Low cables are common in Latin America, and, almost seven years ago on our way down to Colombia, we tore one off right after entering Mexico.

To help avoid this from happening again, we constructed a pair of “deflectors” as seen in the photos. We fastened these to either side of the vent figuring that they will prevent cables or branches from snagging.

Probefahrt und ein Detail

Wir haben mit unserem Pickup samt montiertem Camperaufsatz ein kurze Probefahrt in und um Girardota gemacht. Scheint alles genauso zu sein wie früher, der Toyota packt das nach wie vor gut.
Der Camper ist jetzt nach der Renovierung schön glatt an den Seiten und am Dach mit abgerundeten Ecken und Kanten. Das ist viel besser als die alten Aluminiumfalzen. Nur die Dachluke steht jetzt noch hervor.

Das kann ein Problem werden, wenn man niedrig hängende Kabel oder Äste übersieht. Durchhängende Kabel gibts oft in Lateinamerika, und vor etwa sieben Jahren zum Auftakt unserer Reise nach Kolumbien waren wir kaum nach Mexico gekommen, und schon hatten wir so ein Kabel abgerissen.

Um das zu vermeiden bauten wir ein paar “Abweiser,” wie man in den Fotos sieht. Diese haben wir beiseitig neben der Dachluke angebracht und hoffen, daß dadurch Äste und Kabel nicht mehr hängen bleiben.

Recorrido de Prueba y un Detalle

Llevamos la camioneta con el camper a un recorrido de prueba por los alrededores de Girardota.
Todo parece trabajar tal como lo recordamos, la Toyota parece manejar muy bien el peso del camper.

Después de la renovación, el techo y los lados del camper son lisos y con esquinas redondeadas, una gran mejora en comparación con los rieles de aluminio anteriores. Lo único que sobresale ahora es la ventanilla de ventilación del techo.

La ventanilla puede presentar problema cuando se nos pasa por alto un cable bajo o ramas que cuelgan de los arboles. Los cables bajos son comunes en Latino America.  Hace siete años nos paso en el cruce de la frontera de Mexico.  Tan pronto pasamos la frontera cortamos el cable de la computadora de la oficina de aduana.  Una gran presentación de credenciales...

Para evitar que esto nos suceda de nuevo, Dieter construyo un par de ‘deflectores” como se ve en las fotos. Los instalamos a cada lado de la ventanilla de ventilación con el propósito de prevenir que ramas o cables se enganchen.
